Welcome to the TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) Programme in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at UIC (Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College). Our TESL Programme is designed to meet one of the most pressing needs in the education sector of China today. Nowadays, English has firmly established itself as a ‘World Language’, spoken by more people all over the world than any other, and the number of speakers of English as a second/foreign language has now overtaken the number of native English speakers.

Our TESL Programme aims at providing a solid foundation for producing expert, well-rounded teachers of English for schools and colleges in China. Due emphasis is given to three principal areas in the professional preparation of English teachers, namely, subject knowledge, language proficiency, and language-teaching skills. TESL Programme is so well balanced academically and professionally, and so tailor-made for the would-be English-teaching professional. In selecting this degree programme, students are effectively assured that they will get the most out of a four-year programme in which every course is planned with their professional needs in mind.

It is our goal that the academic experience provided in the TESL Programme will positively influence the student’s worldview, professional and personal growth, understanding of the core meaning of whole person education and lifelong commitment to learning. The ultimate goal is to prepare the students to work in Chinese society while at the same time to have a deep understanding of diverse and rich cross-cultural perspectives.

Our TESL Logo

Our TESL logo is a "fish" composed of the letters "T-E-S-L". It symbolizes an idea that can be related to the old Chinese saying “I’d rather teach you how to fish than just give you the fish (授人以魚不如授人以漁)." "TESL" is an educational major, so TESL students should strive to learn how to teach and teach how to learn. The logo is very simple and easy to draw: when you finish drawing the fish, you give a fish, and you give the way to draw. And we wish we can swim in the UIC ocean freely and happily.

The TESL programme is recognized by the Hong Kong Education Bureau as a language (English) major degree programme. Graduates who have also completed a relevant teacher's qualification will be exempted from the English Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers in Hong Kong.
