James EBEL, M.B.A., Associate Professor

Mr. James Ebel (Jim) is Associate Professor of Public Relations and Advertising at BNU-HKBU United International College. He has also served as the Harrison/Omnicom Chair in Integrated Marketing Communication at West Virginia University (WVU), as an Executive-in-Residence in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and as Chief Marketing Officer at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi).

Jim is the founder of CenterBrain® Partners, Inc. a 25-year old positioning consultancy that has positioned and helps launch over 200 global, national, and regional brands through offices in the United States and the Peoples Republic of China.

Jim’s book, CenterBrain Thinking© is considered a field manual on brand positioning and was recently translated to Chinese and will be published by Peking University Press in fall 2015.

Jim earned an M.B.A. from Indiana University and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

LIU Yaming, MDes, Lecturer

Mr. LIU Yaming graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a master’s degree in Design. He has been engaged in design education for over 7 years, and currently he is the director of the department of Digital Media Art, School of Design, Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai. His main research direction are interaction design and research methods. He is teaching Interaction Design, Visual Creative Design, 2D Digital Design and Portfolio Design, etc.

Derek Fung

Derek Fung, M.A., Lecturer

Mr Fung is a veteran business communication specialist, with 35 years’ experience in public relations and marketing. He has led professional teams in PR consultancies in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Toronto, Canada. He is one of the pioneering PR professionals working in the mainland in the 1980’s, helping global PR consultancies (Hill & Knowlton and Burson-Marsteller) develop the PR industry in the China market. Mr Fung has also in-house credentials, serving Hewlett Packard and Shanghai Industrial in marketing and financial communication respectively.

Mr Fung is a passionate educator, with 18 years’ experience in teaching post-graduate courses in Hong Kong.  He currently teaches classes in Public Relations Writing, Principle of Public Relations and Financial Public Relations. He has taught in five universities in Hong Kong and Macau, in subjects including Strategic PR in Greater China, Financial Communication, Integrated Marketing Communication, Business Communication and Negotiation and Lobbying.

He was a guest Lecturer (2002-2015) School of Journalism and Communications, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lecture featuring the development of advertising industry in Greater China; marketing and advertising scene in China; account planning; creative development and executions; advertising law and global advertising reviews.

Qian Ting HUO(Florence), Ph.D candidate, Lecturer

Ms. Huo has been teaching IELTS and TOEFL courses for 6 years. She currently teaches class in Applied Ethics in Humanities and Social Sciences in UIC. She taught Introduction to Culture and Critical Communication at University of Macau before joining UIC in August 2019.

Her research interests lie in women’s and gender studies and new media. She is particularly interested in the development of feminism in China. She has a background of research with the perspective of feminist theory and critical theory. Now she is expanding her research visions by integrating feminist theory and smartphone dating applications with her existing research profile, and experimenting the combination of quantitative research methods and qualitative research methods in the above research topics. She has been invited to the annual international Feminist Theory Conference by Department of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies of Duke University, United States in 2018 and 2019.
